ROCKETS ACT SWIFTLY – NAB STROMILE!!

Posted by mcmannes on July 19, 2005

According to www.clutchfans.net the Rockets’ patience has paid off. The Rockets have agreed to terms with free agent forward Stromile Swift. It appears that there will be no MLE just a basic deal that actually comes relatively cheap for Houston.

“He has decided to become a Houston Rocket,” Swift’s agent Andy Miller told the Houston Chronicle. “He’s absolutely excited about playing with Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The Houston organization has been very consistent and adamant about getting him.”

The Rockets now have a mid-20’s CENTER, a mid-20’s SMALL FORWARD,
and a mid-20’s POWER FORWARD!!

I’ll take it….

All in the Family/ Jack calls it a day!!

Posted by mcmannes on July 16, 2005

Family Business??

Houston Astros pitcher Roger Clemens, left, talks with his son, Koby, during batting practice Thursday, July 14, 2005, in Houston. Koby, drafted in the eighth round with the 254th pick, signed a contract with the Astros before practice.

JACK SAYS GOODBYE!

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — They stood on rooftops and leaned against chimney pipes. They peered through the open windows of the stately Royal and Ancient clubhouse. They stood 10 deep in front of the shops and flats that line the 18th fairway of golf’s most famous course.
They were there to witness history, a few well-earned tears, and, as it turned out, one wonderfully nostalgic, goose-bump moment when Jack Nicklaus wound the clock back to 1978 and turned the Old Course into a high-decibel chamber.

At exactly 5:58 p.m. local time — so said the timepiece on the stone R&A building — Nicklaus struck the 72nd and final shot of his majors playing career. The birdie putt traveled 13 or so feet and then succumbed to gravity and, who knows, maybe fate. It was the near-perfect ending to the near-perfect golfer.

“I knew that the hole would move wherever I hit,” Nicklaus said later.
He was kidding … I think. Nicklaus and the Old Course have been holding hands almost as long as he and sweetheart Barbara have been together, so anything is possible. Perhaps this was No. 18’s way of saying, “Thank you.”
Nicklaus didn’t make the British Open cut Friday afternoon, but he didn’t have to. Nobody is going to judge him by his rounds of 75-72, respectable numbers that left him just out of reach of weekend play. After all, Nicklaus’ legacy is more secure than the nearby Bank of Scotland branch that holds those prized, commemorative 5-pound notes with the Golden Bear’s mug on the back.

No, this was St. Andrews’s chance to give the 65-year-old Nicklaus a weeklong smooch. And Nicklaus, always the golf romantic, kissed back.

WORLDVISION? Absolutely!

Posted by mcmannes on July 10, 2005

I recently started a monthly sponsorship through Worldvision. For quite some time I’ve been looking for an organization that I could trust and who I felt offered the best chance to ‘make a difference.’ After thoroughly researching the net, Worldvision came to the forefront. They provided an in-depth look at many children around the world as well as their current situations. It was extremely easy to get started and has been very rewarding. It’s odd how a letter from a little 10 year old girl can just light up your day. Here’s a picture of the girl I’m sponsoring – her name is Tatiana and she lives in Columbia.

She’s written me a letter telling about her current living situation and how her mother ’scuffles’ for money for their family. She’s goes about as in-depth as most 10 year-old kids can – very honest insight but very fleeting with a tendency to move on to the next topic! :)

Anyway, if anyone has ever thought of sponsoring a child or a family, WORLDVISION is an excellent choice and is a Christian organization, a must-have for my donations, to be quite honest. I can tell you this, it has been rewarding and very fulfilling to know that you’re actually helping someone whom you may never meet but who knows who you are and appears very grateful for what you’re doing. To think of a family in South America possibly talking about their American sponsor just seems pretty neat to me. When the letters come in, it confirms ‘the neatness!!’

Beam me up, Scotty!!

Posted by mcmannes on July 10, 2005

“Scotty, get us outta here!!”

In his new book, Teleportation – The Impossible Leap, writer David Darling contends that “”One way or another, teleportation is going to play a major role in all our futures. It will be a fundamental process at the heart of quantum computers, which will themselves radically change the world.”

Darling suggests that some form of classical teleportation and replication for inanimate objects also seems inevitable. But whether humans can make the leap, well, that remains to be seen.

Teleporting a person would require a machine that isolates, appraises, and keeps track of over a trillion trillion atoms that constitute the human body, then sends that data to another locale for reassembly–and hopefully without messing up your physical and mental makeup.

“One thing is certain: if that impossible leap turns out to be merely difficult–a question of simply overcoming technical challenges–it will someday be accomplished,” Darling predicts.

WAR OF THE WORLDS!!!

***REVIEW***

Just saw the new War of the Worlds movie and I have to say…it was AWESOME!! It was a true huge, loud, blow-em up, Alien invasion, epic type pop movie. I have to say that it was right there with Independence Day. The graphics were amazing and the sound was incredible, plus, Tom Cruise’s my boy so I had to go see it. However, instead of me writing a review, I’m going to quote a review that I feel was accurate.

“With War of the Worlds [Spielberg] has made what is arguably one of the best 1950s science fiction films ever. Steven Spielberg may actually have done his job in “War of the Worlds” better than he realizes. By showing us how fragile our world is, how imperiled we might well be from without and within, he raises almost against his will a most provocative question: Is the ultimate fantasy an invasion from outer space, or is it the survival of the human race?”
– Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES

ELECTED!!!

Posted by mcmannes on July 9, 2005

Well, there IS bias here and my dad WON his mayoral bid! We were all down at the courthouse handing out little fliers and cards and such to people we didn’t know. Of course, my mom and dad knew practically everyone there. He won convincingly. The margin was something like 585 to 100 or something like that. It was a great day for friends of the family as well. Merle Aaron Sr., who we’ve known all of our lives and whose son, Merle Jr. is one of my oldest friends, won his bid for City Council by a substantial margin. Reluctant to run at first, Merle really embraced it and won handily over his opponent. Also, Bill Conner, another lifelong family friend, also won his attempt at gaining a City Council bid.
Overall, it was a great day. I shot tons of footage of the event. His actual swearing in will be Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 6:30PM. He will then wield the gavel and will officially become the Mayor of Humble, TX. The Mayor of an entire city – it’s still pretty awesome, I think. I’m extremely proud. As I’ve said before, I’ll say it again – there is no man I know that has more integrity than he. He’s honest to a fault, he never places himself in a position that may be construed as inappropriate, his character is untouchable, and his integrity in unwavering. He will not say something and do something different, he will not lead you to believe something that’s false, and he will always be honest with you. His faith is unbreakable and his love for his family is immovable. He’s as great a man as I’ve ever known. He has a chance to be the greatest Mayor that this growing town has ever seen!

First Blog – TRIP 2005

Posted by mcmannes on July 9, 2005

Ok..I’m joining the Blogging revolution. My first entry? Trip 2005! My friend, who was living in San Francisco, had decided to move back to Houston to start his own gig. Well, I decided (After seeing Sideways!!) that he needed to ship his stuff and that he and I would drive back. So, I flew out, we rented a convertible Mustang and hit the road. Being a teacher is extremely condusive to traveling – Summers are GREAT! Basically, we hit all over SF, Lake Tahoe, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Hoover Dam, whatever that city was that had that big-ass crater in it from that meteor, Albq,NM, Roswell, NM (We saw NO aliens), and then back to Houston.

All my pics are posted at http://thrill.myphotoalbum.com. Take a look for yourself.
